Training and consultancy

Our Dementia SPACE Team can provide specialist training courses for organisations looking to build the knowledge and skills of their employees around dementia and end of life care.

The team offer a range of high quality, best practice training, suitable for all professionals who support those with dementia, and their carers. Such as:

Educating nurses, GP’s and carers of the future

Making Space is committed to working with universities to help train the nurses, health professionals and carers of the future.

Our Admiral Nurse is already a tutor in modern dementia care at Bolton University and we hope to branch out to other higher education facilities in time.

Dementia care mapping

We are a host organisation for the internationally and nationally acclaimed Bradford Group Dementia Care Mapping, and our Admiral Nurse is a gold centre mapper. Our team can provide support and care to existing mappers to make sure the correct care is being delivered and plans are properly actioned.

End of life/hospice care

Working in partnership with Bolton Hospice, we run the ‘Forgotten Conversations Partnership Project’, a scheme which trains hospice staff and family carers on how they can improve end of life care and environments for those with dementia. We can also help formulate a specific policy of support for family carers and individuals who wish to return home for their final days.

Bespoke micro sessions

The team also offer a range of Bespoke Micro Sessions, including:

  • Dementia and the brain
  • Activity and communication
  • Distressed behaviour

All of our sessions can be adapted to suit your organisation’s needs.

Consultancy work

The team provide a wide range of bespoke consultancy services to different industry sectors, and are available to work with your organisation to offer advice and raise awareness about dementia in a variety of settings.

For example, we have already been involved in helping train police officers to better understand dementia.

We also offer advice to construction firms about creating housing, parks and other buildings that are more suitable for people with dementia.

Other services:

  • Assistance with developing dementia strategies to help you become more dementia friendly and customer focused
  • Support with developing or running a Dementia Action Alliance
  • Development of staff
  • Help with culture change in dementia care
  • Setting up dementia groups

"Since my Dementia SPACE training, I feel I have gained more skills and I can now look at a situation which involves a person with dementia and evaluate it a lot better. I feel I am definitely more empathetic and I understand people better now. I work in a more person-centred way because I'm now aware of how the brain works, the different types of dementia and its progression. I feel I can advise people better."
