Success at our mental health and dementia carers conference

On 12 October we joined forces with South West Yorkshire NHS Partnership Foundation Trust to host a conference for the carers of those living with a mental health condition or dementia in and around the Barnsley area.

The conference was opened by Deputy Mayor, Cllr Linda Burges, “thank you to you, our carers in Barnsley, for the vital support you give to your friends and family”. Cllr Burgess shared her personal experience as a carer and so understands the pressures which carers face when putting other first, including isolation.

Jane Taylor, Manager of the Family and Friends Team presented “The Transformation of Adult Mental Health Services since April 2017”, a new model of care for local mental health services. Changes to services in Barnsley will provide more recovery-based care and have a more flexible approach to the needs of those using the services, resulting in safer, higher quality care. Evaluation will be an ongoing process and will involve listening to and working with those who use the services, carers and partners.

We were also lucky enough to hear from local carers, Allison Sampson and June Willmott, who spoke passionately about their personal experiences of being carers.

Those attending were able to attend workshops designed to help them in their caring role such as: stress management, mindfulness and autism awareness.

Cath Magee our Area Manager for Yorkshire, thanked everyone for their contributions throughout the day.
