Touching story of how Sainsbury's staff and police helped distressed woman with dementia
"A touching story of how police and supermarket staff came to the aid of a distressed woman with dementia has gone viral.
Kirklees Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team told how the woman had gone shopping to Sainsbury’s at Shorehead, Huddersfield, and forgotten what to do.
The woman had some shopping and flowers but became confused and disoriented.
Supermarket staff went to comfort her and police were called.
Officers found that the woman had dementia and the store gave her the shopping for free and police took her home, the frightened woman clinging to the hand of the police officer all the way.
Making Space, an adult health and social care charity who provide dementia support services in Kirklees, has been working with police in Huddersfield.
More than 70 staff from Huddersfield and Dewsbury police stations had training last year on spotting the signs and how to approach someone with dementia."
