Creating a Place for Everyone: Introducing our new EDI Strategy

Published 12 January 2026

At Making Space, inclusion isn’t just something we talk about, it’s something we live and breathe. It shapes who we are, how we work together, and how we support people to live fulfilling, independent lives.

In November 2024, we began a renewed focus on our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) journey, with a clear aim: to go beyond policies and statements and build a genuine culture of belonging. A culture where everyone feels seen, valued and empowered to be themselves.

Since the first meeting of our EDI Ambassadors in November 2024, that journey has gathered real momentum. The group has grown in confidence and diversity, bringing together colleagues, volunteers and people we support from across Making Space. Together, they have shared lived experience, insight and ideas to help shape our future. Earlier this year, our Ambassadors worked alongside inclusion specialists Purple Infusion to develop our shared EDI Vision and define the role of an EDI Ambassador.

We are proud to share that our Board has now approved Making Space’s first EDI Vision and Strategy, Creating a Place for Everyone. This marks a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

Our EDI Vision

We are dedicated to creating a place for everyone where diversity is embraced, equity is championed, and all individuals feel valued, respected and empowered to succeed. Together, we are building a community where everyone belongs.

To ensure this vision leads to meaningful and lasting change, we have also established an EDI Steering Group, which will oversee progress, provide accountability and ensure our commitments translate into action across the organisation.

Rachel Peacock, Chief Executive, said:

When we began our EDI journey, we set out to build a culture of belonging – where every person feels seen, valued and empowered to be themselves. I’m proud that our Board has now approved our first EDI Vision and Strategy, and grateful to everyone, especially our brilliant EDI Ambassadors, whose passion and courage are helping us create a place for everyone.

Our EDI Strategy, Creating a Place for Everyone, sets out how we will turn our vision into reality. It is not a standalone initiative; it sits at the heart of everything we do and reflects our organisational values of kind hearts, tailor making, dreaming big, having courage and being ready.

We are committed to ensuring that:

  • The people we support are always treated with dignity, fairness and respect
  • Discriminatory behaviour is challenged, wherever it occurs
  • We focus on people, not conditions or labels
  • Our services are high quality, timely and responsive to diverse needs
  • Social and community inclusion is promoted as a right for everyone

Our strategy will be delivered through a CEO-led EDI Steering Group, supported by trustees, colleagues and Ambassadors, alongside a growing network of EDI Ambassadors open to colleagues, volunteers and the people we support. This work is underpinned by a clear Action Plan for 2025–2028, focused on six key themes: Vision and Leadership, Culture, Policies and Procedures, Recruitment, Line Manager Capability, and Training and Development.

Together, we are creating a place for everyone.
