Making Space celebrates the 80th Anniversary of VE Day

Published 13 May 2025
Thursday 8 May 2025 marked 80 years since Victory in Europe Day, a powerful milestone that invites us to reflect on the end of the Second World War, honour the sacrifices made, and celebrate the peace and resilience that followed.
Across the country, communities came together to commemorate this important moment in history, and at Making Space, our services and the people we support took part with creativity, compassion, and joy.
From remembrance displays to music, food, and storytelling, VE Day 80 was celebrated in thoughtful and personal ways throughout our organisation. Here are just a few of the highlights:
Oban Court & Mayflower Court Extra Care, Darlington
Enjoyed an afternoon of celebrations, whilst residents at Oban created a striking commemorative display, featuring an original flag and handmade poppies, bringing history to life through art and memory.
Sandalwood Day Centre, Doncaster
A colourful day of crafts, flags, and fun was topped off with a very special birthday, Barry turned 85!
Dementia Carers Support, Rotherham
Staff arranged the tables in the shape of a giant “VE”, served up a buffet fit for a hero, and celebrated Sheila’s 90th birthday with family and friends.
Clifton Road, Wirral
An afternoon of tea, cake, and heartfelt conversations helped those we support to share their own family stories and reflect on their connections to the war.
Ashwood Supported Pathways, Lowton
A moving tribute with a veteran supported by the service included reading wartime letters, chatting about rationing, and a sing-along with Ashwood Residential.
Kingshill, Wigan
The service attended a 1940s-style party complete with themed food and live music, bringing smiles and a sense of community to all who joined.
Primrose Court & Preston New Road, Lancashire
People we support enjoyed a day out to the VE Day 80 event at Witton Park in Blackburn, an opportunity to join wider community celebrations and make new memories.
Doncaster Carers Support Group: We All Are One
This amazing group came together for a joyful celebration and marked a milestone birthday, plus a special moment for volunteer Joyce, who was born just 10 days after VE Day in 1945.
Beyer Lodge, Manchester
The scheme hosted a celebratory afternoon tea, full of flags, memories and laughter.
Bevan Court, Coventry
Brought everyone together for a tea party, enjoying an afternoon of music, memories and laughter.
Halton Supported Living
Held a VE Day party, and attendees reported they had had great fun and can’t wait for the next one!
Thank you to every team member, volunteer and person we support who took part in commemorating VE Day 80. Your creativity and kindness ensured that this historic anniversary was marked with dignity, celebration, and connection.
