Carers Rights Day 2025 – Know your rights, use your rights

Published 2 November 2025
This year, Carers Rights Day takes place on Thursday 20 November 2025, with the theme ‘Know your rights, use your rights.’
Every day, around 12,000 people become unpaid carers for a partner, family member, or friend – many of whom don’t immediately see themselves as carers and may be unaware of the rights and support available to them.
Carers Rights Day aims to make sure more carers understand their legal rights and feel empowered to use them. Whether they care full time, balance caring with work and family life, or are new to their role, all carers deserve to know about the benefits, services, and protections that exist to support them.
At Making Space, we’re proud to support Carers Rights Day and to celebrate the millions of carers across the UK who provide vital, unpaid care every day. Our teams across the country will be hosting events, workshops, and wellbeing activities to help carers connect, learn more about their rights, and access advice and support.
Supporting carers every step of the way
Caring can be rewarding but also challenging and understanding your rights can make all the difference. From financial and welfare advice to emotional support, carer breaks, and peer groups, Making Space services are here to help carers feel informed, confident, and supported.
Knowing your rights can help you navigate complex systems, access workplace support, and feel empowered to ask for help when it’s needed. It also ensures carers are treated fairly, with respect and recognition for the vital role they play in families and communities.
Even those who have been caring for years can still be unaware of their full entitlements, which is why Carers Rights Day is for everyone, new carers, experienced carers, and those who might not even realise they’re carers yet.

As we mark Carers Rights Day, we’re proud to share this wonderful feedback from a member of our We All Are One Carers Support Group in Doncaster, which offers support, friendship, and an inclusive space for carers to connect, learn, and recharge:
I joined the Carers Group over a year ago. Although, as a carer, I couldn’t attend every session, the times I did attend were absolutely amazing.
The team showed so much care and always made sure I felt welcomed and that my needs as a carer were met. The sessions themselves were wonderful; I not only learned new things but also enjoyed the activities that were thoughtfully planned for the group. I had the pleasure of meeting so many lovely people, and because the group was so diverse, I also gained a deeper understanding of different cultures and religions.
Being part of this group truly motivated me to try new things and gave me the opportunity to enjoy the outings with such a warm, supportive group. My heartfelt thanks to the staff and volunteers who make the Carers Group so special. The group helped me to build up my confidence as well as connect with a group of wonderful ladies.
Making Space CEO, Rachel Peacock said:
Carers Rights Day is a vital opportunity to recognise and celebrate the people who dedicate their time and energy to supporting others. Too often, carers put their own needs aside, not realising the support and rights available to them. At Making Space, we want every carer to feel seen, valued, and empowered. Knowing and using your rights is the first step towards ensuring you receive the understanding and support you deserve.
We’re incredibly proud of our carer support services and teams. Their compassion, creativity, and commitment to carers’ wellbeing truly reflect the values of Making Space – supporting those who give so much of themselves every day.

Getting the benefits you’re entitled to:
One of the most important rights for carers is ensuring you are financially supported through benefits. You could receive financial support through Carer’s Allowance, if you are eligible. To make sure you’re not missing out, it’s vital to get a proper benefit check. You can use an online Benefits Calculator to assess your eligibility:
Alternatively, you can speak to a local benefits advisor for personalised support. Find an advisor in your area using Advicelocal.
There are other ways you may be able to get help with your household finances – such as help with fuel costs, help with health costs, or by applying for certain loans or grants.
A carer’s assessment:
Everyone is entitled to a free carer’s assessment; it is a chance to discuss what services or support you need as a carer. The adult social services department of your local council provides carer’s assessments. The kind of help and support you can get include; respite, information on local carers support groups, help with caring, and any relevant equipment. Find out more at Carers UK.
Request flexible working from your employer:
All carers have the right to request flexible working, find out more at Carers UK.
Carers Rights Day 2025 is an important reminder for carers to know their rights and use their rights. Whether you’re new to caring or have been providing support for years, it’s never too late to check that you’re getting all the help and support you’re entitled to. Stay informed, reach out for advice, and feel empowered to use your rights as a carer.
