About Cheshire East Carers Hub
We know that being an unpaid carer, looking after a family member whilst juggling other things can be challenging. The team support people by doing carer assessments, give information, advice and guidance and support carers with taking a break whether that is one to one support or at a peer support group. Being a carer can be isolating especially if you are unable to see family and friends due to caring. Volunteers will support carers with isolation by either meeting people in a public place or calling a carer on the phone.
Why should you volunteer?
This is a good opportunity to give something back, meet people, gain experience in health and social care and to build your confidence. As a befriender you will be learning from other people and helping unpaid carers feel less isolated.
What will you be doing?

To volunteer an hour or two a week at a time that is convenient for you.

To either meet with the person you are befriending or give them a call at the agreed time and location if in person.

To build a rapport and to have meaningful conversations. We have resources that give you ideas on what to ask and discuss especially when starting.

To report any wellbeing concerns to carer support worker or service manager.
What skills and experience will you need?
Some experience or knowledge of the challenges unpaid carers face is useful for this role. You need to be a good listener, have empathy and to have an understanding of boundaries (but we will go through this during induction too).
